The Masculinity Project: Single Father 12mins 37secs

Produced by Vandora Williams, Danielle Canada, Whitney Robinson, Courtney Ward, Kristin Woolford, and Vandora Williams

According to a 2006 report by the US Census Bureau there are 2.5 million single fathers in America, in 1970 there were 400, 000. This short audio piece from Hampton University follows the life of a black male student juggling the books and a young son. What myths can Terrence’s story dispel about traditional black masculinity? We are also introduced to a professor who is also a single father raising two young girls. What special challenges do black men face raising young girls into young women?

Real and gritty perspectives! Have had many single father experiences in my earlier, fast-paced D.C. life. Now married for years and a grand father, many manhood questions could be answered by having men active in raising a girl. See what you learn about yourself! The essence of manhood is being a father, as my greatest lesson on manhood was when I was doing my thing talking to 3 yr old grand daughter, and she tuned out, saying "you hurt my feelings." It stopped me cold and made me check out my self, feelings and needs, then what I thought my message was and how she interpreted it. More than style, or "flavor" it was all about love and how I was giving it. Check it out. Respect God as he is Father to us - Life still all about the child, Jesus Christ.
