Many complicated, opposing and controversial viewpoints are often presented about Africa. Perhaps because of this, Africa is one of the most fertile grounds in our modern age for new, fresh and exciting exploration.
AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange, as a series, celebrates the cultural and historical growth that has occurred in the last generation using films tailored to a world audience from insightful, artful and often unique local perspectives. These films were carefully selected to portray a more balanced view of Africa than you’ll get on the nightly news and to provide fuel for what must be a global conversation on the present day realities and contemporary lifestyles of Africans, both on the continent and in the Diaspora.
AfroPoP is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), distributed by American Public Television (APT), and supported by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange is a US based public television show featuring independent documentaries and short films about life, art, and culture from the contemporary African Diaspora. The African Diaspora includes Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, South America, Europe, the US, and anywhere people of African descent have made a significant contribution to the culture. AfroPoP is the only series on US Public Television that focuses solely on stories from the African Diaspora.

Duana Butler, Series Director
Duana C. Butler is a Harlem-based producer/director currently at work on her first documentary feature. She has worked on several independent productions including THE WATERMELON WOMAN, A QUESTION OF COLOR and JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE I.R.T. Ms. Butler served as production/curatorial advisor for the 2005 season of WNET's REEL NY series and was recently Director of Marketing for Film/Video Arts, a nonprofit media arts center in NYC.
Angela Tucker, Series Producer
Angela Tucker is a Brooklyn based filmmaker and writer. She directed the web series entitled BLACK FOLK DON’T, which will begin its second season in June 2012. She was the Director of Production at Big Mouth Films, a social issue documentary production company that is a project of Arts Engine, Inc. There, she produced several documentaries for NBC and PBS, including PUSHING THE ELEPHANT (IDFA, Independent Lens) about a Congolese mother and daughter separated over 12 years. (A)SEXUAL, her directorial debut is a feature length documentary about people who experience no sexual attraction. It premiered at Frameline in San Francisco and is currently doing the festival circuit. She received her MFA in Film from Columbia University where she was awarded a Dean’s Fellowship. Angela has her BA with Honors in Theater and African American Studies from Wesleyan University. In 2010, Angela was a Yaddo fellow. You can follow her on Twitter @tuckergurl.
